Retrograde planets are said to be Saktha and the rule
is, that Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Saturn, the five
non-luminous planets (Sun and Moon being luminaries)
are strong when retrograde.
The next important rule, to be remembered is, that Subhas (benefics), when retrograde, give kingdom and health, but Papis (malefics) when retrograde, cause evil (Jathaka Tathwa).
Now, according to the Phaladeepika, a retrograde planet is as strong as an exalted planet; and Manteswara has indicated, in more than one place, that a planet, when retrograde, and when its rays are not eclipsed or overpowered, by the Sun or by Rahu or Kethu. is capable of causing Rajayoga.
